The 2027 Awesome Auroras Calendar Photo Contest

There is no aurora to be seen in Alaska in June and July, so those two months of my 2027 Awesome Auroras calendar have always been the odd ones out. This year I am giving them to you. Submissions open August 31.

Two pages of the 2027 calendar come from your photos. June is decided by a public vote: you submit, you vote, the winner goes in the calendar. July is one I pick by hand. You can enter either month, or both.

Your photo has to have been shot during the month you submit to, but it can be from any year, so there is a good chance the shot you want is already on your hard drive.

The rules, short version Please read before submitting!

• One photo per month, per person. Enter June, July, or both.
• Shot in the month that you submit to, during any year.
• At least 10 megapixels.
• You can enter either month or both. June is decided by a public vote and July is the one I pick by hand. One photo per person for each month, and the same photo cannot be used for both.
• Horizontal, at 3:2. The calendar photo page is 3:2 landscape — 11 by 7.33 inches, printed at 3300 by 2200 pixels. That is the native shape of nearly every camera, so an uncropped photo probably already fits. A vertical photo can be entered, but it will be affected by the crop.
• No AI-generated or AI-extended images, no sky replacement, no composites from more than one frame. I will be reviewing every photo for quality.
• 18 and over, worldwide.
• You can upload a short description with your photo when you submit, and it will be required from the two winners. This description will show up in the sidebar to the left of the date grid.
• You will be credited in the calendar with your name.
• Entering grants use of the photo in the 2027 Awesome Auroras calendar and in marketing for that calendar.
• Winners are contacted by email and have 48 hours to reply.
